11, 12 & 13 Roshambo all put together impressive runs at the tournament!

12 Roshambo has a ball at Mandatory 1!

11 ROSHAMBO finished 1st in their pool by way of a perfect 3-0 record, beating Forza, Surfside, and Active respectively. Their only loss came in the first round of the playoffs against 12 Roshambo.

“We had a tremendous start to the day. Served well, dug a lot of balls. I thought we definitely had a chance to surprise 12 Rosh based on our pool play performance. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take the match. Shari (Iwatani) and 12 Rosh played great, and I guess if we have to lose to someone it might as well be them,” head coach Will Wong said with a smile.

12 ROSHAMBO finished 2nd in their pool, suffering their only loss to cross-town rivals Mizuno Long Beach. But the loss would light a fire inside, sending them on a winning streak that eventually led to a Mandatory 1 championship and the number one overall ranking in the SCVA. Their playoff run included an in-house victory over 11 Roshambo, Wave, and Supernova.

“We did a great job of turning things around. Bad things happen. They always do. It’s about not feeling sorry for yourself when bad things happen, and turning it around in your favor. The girls did that today and I’m proud of them,” said head coach Shari Iwatani after the tournament finals.

13 ROSHAMBO finished 2nd in their pool, also losing to Mizuno Long Beach. And they too responded with a fiery performance, beating Temecula in the first round of playoffs, and Wave in the semi-finals, before dropping a nail-biter to T-street in the finals.

“I was really happy with the way the girls handled the losses. We learn far more from the losses than we do the victories. Losing is part of success. It’s never easy but it is necessary at times, and paramount to development. Overall, I think we played great volleyball. We’re really starting to see the team come together as a single unit, not a group of individuals—and it’s a lot of fun to watch,” said head coach Lisa Steenport.
