Both teams finish atop their pool with undefeated records.

13 Roshambo continued their success at Q2 by finishing 3-0 and never dropping a set. And they did it with great serving and disciplined defense.

“The girls have really been working hard and it paid off. You can see how comfortable they’ve become in our defensive system and we’re digging a lot more balls. We had a ton of aces as well, which always helps,” stated Head Coach Lisa Steenport after the tournament.

13 Rosh totaled 14 service aces on the day. Five more than they accumulated at Q1. The flurry of aces helped to beat Coast, 949, and Laguna Beach.

“We’re getting significantly better with each tournament, and that’s the real goal. I just hope the girls see it and continue to work as hard as they are right now the rest of the season. I think they will. This team has a hunger for winning,” concluded Steenport.

13 Roshambo will have to wait a full month to compete again at Q3 on February 24th. They’re looking to tighten up their offense in the practices leading up to the tournament.

14 Roshambo’s season record improved to 6-0 after going 3-0 at Q2.

“This team has historically played great defense and that was definitely still the case at Q2. I thought we did a nice job serving in runs, and our pin hitters had nice days, especially Eva (Lekovic) and Payton (Hudspeth),” said Assistant Coach Jez Nueve.

The girls were able to take down 951, Beach Cities, and crosstown rival Forza Under Armour to secure first place in their pool.

“We still have some work to do with blocking and our offense as well. But at the same time, it’s the first time these girls have been asked to push an offense with true pace, so there’s still a learning curve there,” finished Nueve.

14 Roshambo will have a three-week training block before heading into the final SCVA Qualifier, which will decide which Division the team will start in.

“It’ll be great to see how they respond when something is on the line. It’s hard to recreate match pressure in practice, so that’ll be great for them,” said Head Coach Vanessa Williams-Mukai.
